Abstract

This study examined the influence of Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria for improving teaching profession in the public secondary schools in Southeast Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Two research questions and two research hypotheses guided this study. The population comprised all the public secondary schools in South Eastern States of Nigeria. They were one thousand, four hundred and eighty three (1483). Through the application of stratified, purposive and simple random sampling techniques, a sample of 297 principals and 891 teachers which total 1188 respondents representing 20% of the population was covered in the survey. A structured questionnaire titled “Influence of Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria in Improving Teaching Profession Questionnaire (ETRCNITPQ)” was adopted in collection of data for the study. The face and construct validity of the instrument was carried out by experts. Cronbach Alpha reliability technique was used in determining the reliability coefficients of the instrument which gave a coefficient of .88 which was considered high enough and reliable for the instrument. The research questions were analyzed using mean statistic while the hypotheses were tested using independent t-test. Findings from the study showed that staff annual appraisal report and classroom observations by supervisors are consistent competency assessment techniques utilized to evaluate teachers in public secondary schools in southeast Nigeria.  The study recommended that Government should consider including having a TRCN certificate as a criteria to become a teacher in public secondary schools.
